Homemade Fun!

I have been wanting to make homemade laundry detergent for a while now. I was always hesitant because a lot of people have said that is does not work as well as store bought. I thought I would try it nonetheless. Not only is it A LOT cheaper (Tide is about 30 cents per load and this is less than 5 cents), it is 100% natural and detergent-free so it is great for sensitive skin and allergies. No toxins for me thank you. And it is better for the environment if you are into that. I recommend using the powder recipe instead of the liquid sludge one.

So here is how it works:

Ingredients: 1 bar of Fels-Naptha soap (you can substitute Zote, or Ivory)
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax

*All of these ingredients can be found at Kroger

Process:

STEP ONE- Grate soap

STEP TWO- Grind soap shavings in food processor or blender until fine

STEP THREE- Pour soap into a large bowl. Add 1 cup Borax

STEP FOUR- Add 1 cup washing soda

STEP FIVE- Mix well and pour into favorite air-tight container

Voila!

Easy, right? You only need 1 tablespoon for normal loads and 2 for large/soiled ones. You can also add your favorite essential oil to the wash if you want a smell. I think the soap smell is pleasant enough. After two weeks of using my concoction, I can say with confidence that IT IS GREAT! And I recommend everyone trying it out. Two things you should know if you do: 1. pour soap into washer basket first, then start water and let it dissolve for a few seconds before you add clothes 2. Soap will not lather. That does not mean it is not working. It just does not have the harsh detergents that others do. Fels-Naptha is 100% pure beef tallow soap, no detergent.

:) Hooray for homemades!

I think this is really cool. It seems like a lot of work though, for not that much. But i guess if it only requires 1 tbl spoon...how long does it last?
However, as a vegetarian.. do you realize your washing your clothes in beef?

If the cow is going to be killed anyway for meat, you might as well use the fat to wash your clothes... I like to smell beefy
